Starting from the Cosby Picnic area, we’ll begin our hike with a short (0.4 mile) walk up the Low Gap Trail to then pick up Lower Mt. Cammerer, which provides a slow climb on a smooth pine-needle trail in and out of creek valleys to reach the Appalachian Trail (after a total distance of 7.8 miles). We’ll pass CS 35 along the way (at mile 3.6). Be sure to look for the Phillips Cemetery at about mile 6.1. After having lunch on the AT, we’ll return the way we came.
Total hike distance is 15.6 miles (if you do the whole thing) with elevation gain of 2,000 ft., rated Difficult due to distance. You can choose to turn around at any point.
To carpool, meet at the Cracker Barrel Strawberry Plains (1510 Cracker Barrel Lane, exit 398 of I40), ready to leave at 7:00am or at Cosby Picnic Area Parking B (close to the Low Gap TH) at 8:00am. Drive 108 miles RT {@ 7¢/mile = $7.56}.
After you register, please send the hike leader an email indicating whether you will meet at the Carpool or the trailhead. The leader will meet at the trailhead. Hike Leader: Pat Watts, patty.watts@aol.com, 901-487-7941.
