The
Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection, a department of the Knox County
Public Library System, is located in the East
Tennessee Historical Center. The
1870s white marble building is located on the corner of Market and
Clinch, one block west of the Tennessee Theatre on Gay Street. The
building is directly across the street from the entrance to Krutch
Park. The McClung Collection houses a wonderful array of Smoky
Mountains Hiking Club (SMHC) material. You will be delighted
by photographs and text outlining the club’s history. The
SMHC Collection includes: correspondence dating from 1929, Board
Minutes and President’s Files, Club Handbooks ranging from 1926
to the present, Hike Notices (later called Newsletters), Happy Trails,
A.T. committee publications, songbooks, tape recordings, subject files,
photographs and slides.
Because
this historically valuable collection is housed in archival surroundings,
it is necessary to call or write ahead to make arrangements to view
it. Please call Steve Cotham, Manager of the McClung Collection,
at (423) 544-5743, at least one day in advance of your planned visit. For
viewing the collection on weekends, it is essential that an appointment
be made in advance; the limited weekend staff cannot retrieve the material
for drop-in researchers.
Paid
parking facilities are readily accessible, and metered parking spots
are available on the streets. The entrance to the McClung Historical
Collection is on the Clinch Avenue side of the building. Ride
the elevator to the third floor. Researchers may bring in one
notebook only; other items must be left in lockers which are available
in the lobby.
