AR Box 1 Artifacts (1922-1924)

Copper box which originally held the record book signed by hikers to Mt. LeConte, 1922-1924. Two copper engravings used in the printing of the SMHC Handbooks for many years, until printing techniques used since 1961 retired them from active use: Engraving #1: Emblem for the SMHC designed in 1924 by Louise Smith. Her design won the contest held to create a unique emblem for the club. The design features an inverted triangle, symbolizing the SMHC's early connections with the YMCA. A circle encloses a mountain scene and represents the SMHC. The emblem appears on the cover of the SMHC Handbook, and in more recent years, has had the addition of an AT symbol, signifying the club's affiliation with the Appalachian Trail Conference. 1 pc. Backed on wood. 3.25 x 3". Engraving #2: Illustration of a moonlit trail through the woods, with an AT symbol on a tree in the foreground and the initials RLM, for the designer Robert Lindsay Mason (1874-1952), who was an early member of the SMHC and the first club historian (1930-1933). The sketch was first used in the 1957 SMHC Handbook, and was often used in handbooks for the next forty years. l pc. Backed on wood. 1.25 x 1.25".
